as caterpillars munch at the porch broom
and maggots devour the trash
your face visibly shadows.
beetles eye you through rent sockets.
in their ruptured gazes, they find nothing you could have done to deserve this.
what you then desired has no bearing, and what you wish for now never did
when the children and the elderly come crawling home, do you know what you’ll say?
